Understanding the Roman Numeral System

The Roman Numeral Numeric System, as commonly used today, is based on seven symbols from the alphabet we recognize.

Roman numeralDecimal number
I1
V5
X10
L50
C100
D500
M1000

Numbers are formed by combining these letters and adding their values. In the Roman Numeral system, a letter placed after another of greater or equal value adds. Thus II is 2 and XV is 15. It’s important to note that a letter of lesser value placed before another of greater value subtracts, thus IV is 4. This system of subtractive notation creates an easily used form of shorthand with roman numbers. Using subtractive notation the numeral VIIII becomes simply IX. Roman Numeral Converter
